"THE FOR HIM FOUR" QUARTET

l. to r.: John Pulley, Michael Henkel, Andy Fletch, John Polacok in front of the stone wall fence at St. Peter's

During the internship of Vicar John Polocak in the Sullivan-Williamsford Lutheran Parish, he willingly shared his gift of music with parishioners. Early in the year, Vicar John joined with Andy Fletch, John Pulley and Michael Henkel to sing at the funeral of one of St. Peter’s members. The group named themselves "The For Him Four" and their music was soon in demand!

A suggestion was made by Gerald Golem that the quartet’s music be recorded for all to enjoy. Hours were spent by the four singers, their accompanist Liz Pulley and audio technician Gerald Golem rehearsing for and finally producing a CD and cassette tape of their music, entitled "Because He Lives." A concert featuring the quartet’s music was held in July and St. James’ Church was filled to capacity for the event.

Response to the first CD was so overwhelming the group decided to produce a second CD, a collection of Christmas music. The second CD was released at a concert, held on a wintry November night at St. James’. The concert, sponsored by St. James’ Faith Life Branch, was a fundraiser for Grace Lutheran Church in Long Beach, Mississippi. Fifteen of that church’s members had their homes destroyed when Hurricane Katrina swept through the area. One sandal was the only thing the church’s pastor found of her personal belongings. The church, attended by St. James’ members Del and Colleen Budd during the winter months, was miraculously saved from destruction. Over $1,600 was raised that evening for the people of Grace Lutheran Church and several copies of the quartet’s second CD, entitled "I Wonder As I Wander", were sold.

Orders are still being taken for "The For Him Four" quartet’s two CDs and cassette tapes. The CDs sell for $12 each and the cassette tapes are $10 each. If interested, please contact Gerald Golem at (519) 363-2544 or by e-mail at golem@bmts.com

All proceeds will go towards the purchase of sound equipment for the parish.

At about the same time, Pearl (Minke) Magee, who had served as organist at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Sullivan from1923-1929 and again from 1939 to 1961 went Home to be with Our Lord. She was 95 years of age. In her memory, her daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Bev Grahlman and Erla and Glenn McNabb, all of Owen Sound, made a financial donation to the Sullivan-Williamsford Lutheran Parish. A decision was made by church council to put the money towards a CD recording unit in order that music of the newly-formed men's quartet, now named The For Him Four, could be recorded. It seemed to be a rather fitting way to remember Pearl and the gift of music she so lovingly shared with St. Peter's congregation for so many years.

On Friday evening, July 8th, St. James' Lutheran Church in Williamsford was filled to capacity for a CD release concert, featuring The For Him Four. The concert was dedicated to the memory of Pearl Magee.

The CD, entitled "Because He Lives", was a totally in-parish project, with accompaniment by Liz Pulley, the parish organist; cover design by Michael Henkel, who serves as parish secretary and recording and CD production by Gerald Golem, the parish audio technician.
