"TO GOD BE THE GLORY!" will be the theme for the 140th anniversary celebration of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Sullivan in 2002.
Former and present members of St. Peter's congregation, and the Sullivan-Williamsford Lutheran Parish, as well as former pastors, are invited to join in the celebration.

Celebrating a special occasion, such as a church anniversary, is always an exciting time. There are always many fond memories to share, and reason for us to pause and reflect on the blessings we have received. We are indeed grateful to our Heavenly Father for sustaining us and this place of worship. We do have reason to celebrate - His goodness to us, the strong faith of our ancestors, the leadership of our pastors, and the promise of a bright future filled with doing His work in this community.

A committee consisting of members Lisa Albright, chairperson; Mary Golem, secretary; Margaret Golem, Ken Scholtz, Morrell and Iris Schwartz, Hilda Albright, Irene Swartz, Jerry and Lorraine Kreuger, Audrey Lembke and Pastor Sheilah Fletch held three meetings in 2001 to begin making plans for the 2002 anniversary year.

A special anniversary weekend has been planned for Thanksgiving weekend, October 12 and 13, 2002. An anniversary banquet will be held at the Chesley Community Centre on Saturday evening, October 12, 2002. Intern Elina Horvath will be our guest speaker and there will be special musical entertainment.

On Sunday, October 13, 2002 at 2 p.m., a special anniversary worship service will be held at St. Peter's with Dr. Arnie Weigel, Associate Professor- Practical Theology and Supervisor of Contextual Education at the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, will be our guest speaker. In 1999, Dr. Weigel was involved in a six-month sabbatical in the Georgian Bay Conference to study "Small Congregations in a Rural Context." His study was very well received and has resulted in the development of a course on small, rural congregations at the Seminary. Dr. Weigel is also the person in charge of the Internship Program which has enabled our parish to have Intern Elina Horvath with us until May 2002.

A history book, outlining the life of the congregation since the publication of the first history book in 1992, will be written. Letters were sent to MPP Bill Murdoch and MP Ovid Jackson regarding possible government funding for a history book. There was no response from Ovid and Bill sent information about Trillium grants. Since Trillium money is generated from casinos, and since the Social Action Committee of the Parish has opposed casinos/gambling in the past, it was decided it would be wrong to accept any Trillium funding. It was decided to cover the entire cost of the history book through the sale of the book. Work has begun on the book and anyone interested in helping with it is asked to contact Mary or Margaret Golem. Volunteer help is also needed to gather names and addresses of past and present members for the mailing of invitations.

Anyone interested in helping in any way with St. Peter's 2002 Anniversary plans is asked to contact Lisa Albright.
